Third Circular

ISARS '98

9th International Symposium on Acoustic Remote Sensing and Associated Techniques of the Atmosphere and Oceans

Vienna, Austria, 6 - 10 July 1998

Dear colleague!

This is the third and last circular for the ISARS ´98 Symposium. It should contain everything you need to know. Last updates including the final programme will be made available on the ISARS web site (http://www.boku.ac.at/imp/isars/isars4.html) and - if important - by e-mail.

1) Registration

Everybody who receives this circular is already registered for ISARS ´98. Nevertheless, there is a form enclosed which we ask you to return until 30 April 1998. It deals with:

2) Accommodation reservation

If you want to make use of the official conference accommodation, please complete the accommodation reservation section of the enclosed form. A deposit of ATS 250 is required (except if you have been offered local hospitality).

The meeting takes place at the "Exner Haus" which is about 1500 m away. It is a beautiful walk with a view to forested hills, vineyards and village-type suburbs. For those who don't like to walk, a shuttle will be organised. Details are shown in the map.

3) Payment of the conference fee

The conference fees are repeated on the enclosed payment form. You can pay by bank transfer (free of charges for the recipient; this is the preferred way), sending a bank cheque or a eurocheque in ATS, or by credit card (Visa and Master are accepted). Please indicate your payment details on the form.

If you cancel your participation after 15 May 1998, advance payments will be refunded after deduction of a cancellation fee of ATS 500 (ATS 250 for students).

4) Health insurance

We can offer a health insurance for the duration of their stay in Austria to all participants who need that. The costs are very reasonable. If you need insurance (e.g. for your visa), please complete the respective section of the enclosed form.

5) Visa

Participants from Former Soviet Union countries, India, and some other countries need visa to enter Austria. Please apply in time for the visa and let us know if you encounter any difficulties. We can support you by the health insurance mentioned above. A confirmation of the insurance will be mailed to those who require it as soon as possible.

6) Presentation of papers, extended abstracts

Corresponding authors have already been informed by fax about the acceptance of their papers. The respective letters are enclosed to this circular as originals. Instructions for authors are also enclosed. Please note the limit of four pages (6 pages for invited papers) and the closing date for submission (31 May 1998).

The time allotted for each oral presentation is 15min + 5min for discussion. Invited papers will be 30 minutes including discussion. Posters can be 140cm wide and 190cm high (the lower frame of the boards is close to the floor, so you might wish not to use all the height).

7) Travel

Here we give you short descriptions on how to reach the official accommodation if you come from the airport or the train stations. The Agricultural University (Universität für Bodenkultur - often just called "BOKU") is located in the 18th district, in the Northwest of Vienna.

If you need other local travel information: the ISARS web site includes links to an electronic public transport information system for Vienna as well as an electronic city map.

a) from the airport (~60-80 minutes travel time)

Proceed to the underground train station, and get a single ticket to Vienna there. It costs ATS 34 and is valid for the whole public transport network in Vienna. Trains run every 30 minutes and are much cheaper than the airport buses.

Get off the train at Wien-Mitte and take subway U4 direction Heiligenstadt, until Spittelau. Change to subway U6 direction Alt-Erlaa and go two stops until Währingerstrasse-Volksoper. Change to tram 41 direction Pötzleinsdorf and go until the second-last stop (called Pötzleinsdorfer Strasse).

If you want to use a taxi, it is advisable to order a taxi from Vienna in the arrival hall (from a counter there, or by telephone, e.g. 31300). This should cost ATS 340. Local taxi waiting outside may charge you ATS 500 or more.

If you have just missed a train and want to use the airport bus: these buses run to Wien-Mitte, Wien-West and Wien-Süd train stations so that then you can then follow one of the other descriptions.

b) from train station Wien-West
(~25 minutes travel time)

Get yourself a single ticket (ATS 20; there are also strip cards for 4 rides at ATS 68, bundles of 5 single tickets for ATS 85, 24-hr-tickets, 72-hour-tickets, etc.; don´t forget to stamp your ticket at the little blue machines in the subway station, tram or bus) and use subway U6 direction Floridsdorf until station Währingerstrasse-Volksoper. Change to tram 41 direction Pötzleinsdorf and go until the second-last stop (called Pötzleinsdorfer Strasse).

c) from train station Wien-Süd (~45min travel time)

Get a ticket as described above. Then use tram D direction Beethovengang until Schottentor. Change to tram 41 direction Pötzleinsdorf and go until the second-last stop (called Pötzleinsdorfer Strasse).

8) Weather

Typical weather for July in Vienna would be partly sunny and partly cloudy with some rain showers, with daytime temperatures around 25ºC. However, it can be as hot as 35ºC, or (as last year) temperature may be below 15ºC with rain pouring down for days. Thus, be prepared! Nowadays, there are many weather forecasts on the web. See the ISARS web page for a link to the official (short-range) forecast for Austria.

9) Local registration and opening ceremony

The local registration will take place on Sunday, 5July, from 16.00-19.00 at the official accommodation, and on Monday, 6 July, from 8.30-9.30 and 13.00-17.00 in the Exner-House. The Opening Ceremony will take place between 10 and 12 a.m. in the Gregor-Mendel-House.
