9th International Symposium on Acoustic Remote Sensing and Associated Techniques of the Atmosphere and Oceans

Vienna, Austria
6-10 July 1998

First Circular

Organized by the Institute of Meteorology and Physics of the University of Bodenkultur

General Information

The 9th International Symposium on Acoustic Remote Sensing and Associated Techniques of the Atmosphere and Oceans is organized by the International Society of Acoustic Remote Sensing (ISARS). ISARS grew out of a series of workshops begun in the early 1970s. At the beginning of the 1980s a bi-annual series of symposia was started. The latest symposium were held in Boulder (1994) and Moscow (1996).

The Institute of Meteorology and Physics of the University for Bodenkultur is the official host of the 9th Symposium which will take place in Vienna, Austria, during the week of 6-10 July 1998.

The schedule is planned from Monday to Friday with invited papers on the different topics. Papers will be presented as oral and poster presentations.

A volume of extended abstracts will be available at the beginning of the conference. It is planned to offer the possibility to publish full papers in a special issue of a reviewed journal.

A one-day workshop is organized to stimulate the interaction of scientists, manufacturers and users.

Conference Topics

The topics of the symposium are listed below, followed by a selection of keywords illustrating the spectrum of possible contributions.

1. Propagation and scattering of sound in the atmosphere and oceans

2. Instrument development and accuracy

3. Oceanic applications

4. Atmospheric applications

Exhibition

Companies manufacturing equipment for acoustic remote sensing and associated techniques are invited to exhibit their products. Their active participation in the workshop on applications and the symposium is most welcome.

Workshop on Applications

Continuous profiles of wind speed and direction up to 500 m above ground plus information on turbulence - if you need that, then you should visit the ISARS '98 Workshop on Sodar Applications. It will bring together experienced sodar scientists, manufacturers and end-users in

Participants from these fields are invited to present their data needs and discuss the usefulness of remote sounding systems with scientists specialized on these instruments in a special session.

Place of the Symposium: Vienna -
in the middle of Europe

The Symposium will be held on the campus of the University of Bodenkultur.

Accommodation will be arranged by the Local Organizing Committee close to the meeting place at moderate prices.

The Call for Papers will be distributed in autumn 1997.

Abstracts for presentations will be accepted until 31 January 1998.
